Monasterio de San Lorenzo de El Escorial

Built in the late 16th-century by King Philip II of Spain to commemorate his victory over the French at the battle of San Quentin, this striking complex at the foot of Mount Abantos in the Sierra de Guadarrama contains a monastery, two palaces and a library. The monastery is noted for its symmetrical design, with four towers marking each of its corners, and for being the resting place of former Spanish kings and queens.
