Plus, Las Rozas Village – another member of The Bicester Village Shopping Collection and just 30 minutes from the Spanish capital – is lending its fashion flair to the Balenciaga and Spanish Painting exhibition at the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum.
The Prado is the pride and joy of Madrid and one of the finest art museums on the planet. Salvador Dalí agreed, describing it as “incontestably the best museum of old paintings in the world”. Built in 1785 to house the Spanish royal family’s collection, it is crammed with masterpieces by El Greco, Velázquez and Hieronymus Bosch.
Reina Sofia Museum
The Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia is the hotspot for Spanish modern art and home to Spain’s most famous painting: Guernica, by Picasso. But don’t start and stop there. There’s lots more to see, including plenty more important Picassos, and an extensive Salvador Dalí collection. Then there are works by Miró, as well as pieces by Damien Hirst, Francis Bacon, Paul Klee, René Magritte, Henry Moore and Anish Kapoor.
Explore the Balenciaga and Spanish Painting exhibition at the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum from 18 June to 22 September, brought to you in partnership with Las Rozas Village. This exhibition connects the work of Cristóbal Balenciaga, one of the most influential fashion designers of all time, with painting through the ages. From the simple, minimalist lines of religious habits to the billowing train of a flamenco dancer’s dress, Balenciaga’s designs were awash with references to traditional 16th- and 17th-century Spanish art, which he reinterpreted in a strikingly contemporary way.
The Thyssen-Bornemisza, sometimes described as the greatest art collection in the world, also boasts a dazzling assortment of treasures including works by (deep breath) Titian, Tintoretto, Van Dyck, Rubens, Rembrandt, Canaletto, Gainsborough, Monet, Renoir, Degas, Toulouse-Lautrec, Gauguin, Cézanne, Van Gogh, Picasso, Dalí, Klee, Chagall, Hopper and Rothko.
